Family
Born in Corpus Christi as the oldest of four kids, my brother and sisters and I grew up in a US Navy family. My father, LCDR Glen Peters, was a helicopter pilot; both my parents came from farming families in Brenham, Texas. I graduated from Key West High School as a proud Conch in 1978. My two oldest children Rachel and Joshua were born in 1980 and 1981 in Wuerzburg, Germany. They helped me study applied physics while they learned their ABC's and 123's. I met my husband Tu Do at Christopher Newport "College" in 1985 and Peter was born in 1987. Tu and I decided to leave our jobs at NASA Langley to move to San Antonio so I could go to medical school in 1990. We've been Texans ever since. Corpus Christi was our home from 1994 to 2008, but we are delighted to live in Austin now.
Career
It was challenging to pursue medical training with a growing family, but Tu was my stalwart support. I worked for five years at an indigent care clinic after leaving residency. Then in 2003 I opened a small holistic medical practice in Corpus Christi, Texas -- Integrated Family and Complementary Medicine, incorporating medical acupuncture and principles of meditation with traditional allopathic medical care. During that time I also worked part time as a hospitalist at Spohn Hospital and as an intake physician at the VA Outpatient clinic. In September 2007 I founded Amaravati, LLC for several professional projects. See more about Amaravati on my Projects page.
Since January 2009, I've been practicing urgent care medicine and in December 2010 accepted the position of Clinic Medical Director at TexasMedClinic's Southpark location in Austin. I'm proud of these accomplishments and enjoy promoting health care in the Austin area by visiting on various local shows such as KVUE and KEYE television.
Community
My passion for the environment started when I was in junior high school, inspired by my uncle, Captain Eco Clark; that led me to help establish a soda can recycling program at NASA Langley and to start one at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio. Other community projects I'm proud of include a trance dance workshop in 1994, a community drum circle in Corpus Christi, and the program "Meditation for Stress Management" at the CHRISTUS Spohn Wellness Center.
Spiritual friends and service
I am deeply committed to the Buddhist science of mind and its principles of compassion, interdependence, and altruism. Since embarking on the Buddhist path, my time has primarily been devoted to the service of establishing Buddhism in America; in 1995 I became a student of the great Tibetan yogic master Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, and in 1998 I met my root guru, Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche. In addition to coordinating meditation practice and study programs and attending Nitartha Institute from 2001 - 2005, I've served for over a decade in various administrative roles for Ponlop Rinpoche's student community Nalandabodhi US. I coordinated the Nalandabodhi Pilgrimage to India 2005 where we met with Tibetan lineage masters including His Holiness the Dalai Lama and His Holiness 17th Karmapa: I was honored to serve as His Holiness Karmapa's personal physician during Karmapa's first trip to the US, Karmapa In America 2008. In the course of this service I've learned about non-profit organizational management, customer care principles, leadership and governance.
Hobbies
My first projects were terrariums, macrame, and sewing while in high school. Now I knit and occasionally crochet. Whenever possible I've had a home garden. In the past I danced and drummed frequently, but as I age and have greater work responsibilities I do more gardening and social net-working. Visit my blog here. My aspiration for 2012 and beyond to retirement is to purchase a mini farm for organic crops where we will build an off-the-grid monolithic dome home for the Amaravati perfumery studio.
